TRAVELEX LAUNCHES EMERGENCY MONEY SERVICE FOR STRANDED TRAVELLERS

Date: April 4, 2010

Travelex, the leading foreign exchange card and international payments company is launching a transatlantic initiative today to help school parties and travellers stranded in the US to get access to emergency funds.

Travelex has set up an emergency hotline to allow stranded schools to order a prepaid currency card, Cash Passport that can be picked up in the US. Travelex can load a US Dollar or Sterling Cash Passport card for the school in the UK, delivered to the trip leader in the US for them to use in ATMs or shops and restaurants, while they are waiting for their return details to be finalised. Even with Airspace re-opening many school parties are currently facing trips extended by over a week and the difficulty of getting access to large amounts of US Dollars at short notice.

By calling 0845 300 2449 from the UK or, freephone 1 800 221 2426 from the US, schools can request a card loaded in an individual’s name that will be dispatched locally. Stranded school parties in the US can have the card, loaded with up to $5,000, delivered to their hotel or they can collect it from a Travelex shop. Once activated by phone and loaded, the Cash Passport can be used at over 415,000 ATMs in the US and 29.4 million locations globally. All ATM withdrawal fees will be refunded when the card is cashed out, on return to the UK. Relatives can also arrange for a card, loaded with up to US$1,000, to be delivered to or collected by stranded travellers.

The hotline number can also be used to initiate a Western Union money transfer through Travelex’s 24/7 multilingual call centre. Transfers can be made to anywhere in the world and can also be carried out or collected at any Travelex shops.

Peter Jackson, CEO, Travelex, said, “Travelex has a presence across the US and we have set up the emergency number to support stranded travellers that need to get access to additional foreign currency. Through Cash Passport and its Emergency Cash service, which also utilises Western Union network of 364,000 locations, they will be able to get immediate access to funds to help them finance the unexpected extension to their trips.”
