New Zealand’s new dollars

The New Zealand dollar (NZD) has been the official currency of the country since 1967 and is among the 10 most exchanged currencies in the world. As with other dollar systems, there are 100 cents to each dollar. Many items will be priced in cents as well as dollars, so keep a supply of 10, 20 and 50 cent coins to hand.

Tipping is not compulsory here, so don’t worry about leaving a percentage of your bill unless your service was truly exceptional.

Frequently used banknotes

The notes currently in circulation are for the value of 5 (orange), 10 (blue), 20 (green), 50 (purple) and 100 (red). Each banknote features the image of a bird that is native to the country, as well as a notable New Zealander (or, in the case of the 20 dollar note, Queen Elizabeth II).
