Heading to Amsterdam? If you’re hoping to get away from the usual tourist tips, here we’ve gathered together a few of our favourite hidden gems from across the city.
A museum dedicated to cats
Calling all cat lovers, the KattenKabinet might just be your ultimate museum. Dedicated to our furry feline friends, the KattenKabinet houses an impressive amount of cat based art, from paintings to drawings – and even some real life cats. You can catch work here by Pablo Picasso and Rembrandt, or you can just enjoy the fun of it all!
Seven countries in seven houses
Commissioned back in the 1894 by politician and banker Samuel van Eeghen, this charming row of seven houses represents the different architectural styles of seven countries across Europe. If you’re a fan of French romanticism, charming English cottages, or German Gothicism, you’ll love a visit to the Seven Houses. Once there, don’t forget to discover the Russian, Spanish, Italian and Dutch houses too!
Zevenlandenhuizen, Roemer Visscherstraat
A very musical museum
Music lovers, rejoice! You’re bound to have a fabulous time playing around at the Pianola Museum. This tiny hub of musical history is home to an impressive collection of automatic playing pianos, electric pianos, gramophones, vinyl records and plenty of other musical memorabilia. If you’re looking for something offbeat to do in Amsterdam, this is definitely it.
An underwater prison
Built back in the 17th century, Torensluis is Amsterdam’s widest bridge – and one of its oldest too. But what lies under the bridge is perhaps much more fascinating: look closely and you’ll see the barred windows and arched entrance leading to the old dungeon below the water. These days, the prison is used for much more fun events, such as art exhibitions and evening occasions.
Torensluis, Amsterdam Centrum
The world’s only floating flower market
If you’re hoping to impress someone special, be sure to take them along to the Bloemenmarkt to pick up a bouquet or two. It’s the only floating flower market in the whole world, and the floating stalls that gather here every day are a sight to behold. For the green fingered among you, the market also sells its own bulbs so that you too can grow your own bloemen!
