The lowdown on the Polish zloty

‘Zloty’ is a Polish translation of the word ‘golden’, which is appropriate considering the first iteration of Poland’s currency came in the form of Middle Age golden coins. Following a period of hyperinflation in the ‘80s, the Polish government started printing bank notes without the backing of resources, and denominations increased from 5,000 złotych in 1982 to 500,000 złotych in 1990. By 1993, inflation decreased to below 40%, resulting in the currency stabilising and foreign investment returning to Poland.

A look back at British pound to Polish zloty rates

For the past decade, the pound/zloty exchange rate has varied greatly due to a multitude of factors, including the 2008 global financial crisis, when the zloty reached an all-time high of 4.03 to the pound. A period of slow weakening occurred from 2013 onwards, until the British referendum result in June 2016 significantly knocked the pound off his highs against the zloty.
