The lowdown on the New Zealand dollar

Historically one of the most traded currencies in the world, the New Zealand dollar is the official currency of not only the country of New Zealand, but for several other island territories in the South Pacific. The New Zealand dollar started out pegged to the US dollar. In 1985 it was floated on the open market and has steadily grown in trading popularity until today, when it is the world’s 10^th most traded currency.

The relationship between the pound and New Zealand dollar has been a volatile one, with the pound reaching all-time strength against the dollar in August 1992, at NZ$3,707. The dollar went through a period of gaining strength during the early 2000s, reaching highs of NZ$1,793 in 2013. Recently, a marginal weakening pattern has emerged, as the New Zealand dollar comes under pressure from the likes of Brexit and various geo-political events.
