How the riyal adds up
The riyal has been the official currency of Saudi Arabia since the country was unified in 1932 and has existed as legal tender for years before this happened.
There are 100 halalas to every riyal. Some 1 riyal coins are marked as 100 halalas, but either style is accepted as legal tender. Most transactions are carried out in riyals, so it is far more convenient for both buyer and seller to round every amount to the nearest riyal instead of dealing in halalas.
Commonly used banknotes
The notes you will typically need in Saudi Arabia are for the value of 1 (light green), 5 (purple), 10 (brown), 50 (dark green), 100 (red) and 500 (blue) riyals. They each depict a historical king as well as a famous location or site within the country.
