Must-sees in Saudi Arabia

  • Jeddah
  • The sweeping sand dunes of the countryside are the perfect spot for a camel ride! This is an unforgettable way to take in the landscape, especially near the coastal city of Jeddah.
  • Mecca
  • As the holiest city in the religion of Islam, Mecca attracts thousands of visitors every year. The Grand Mosque and the Jabal-al-noor Mountain are just two of Mecca’s impressive sights.
  • Riyadh
  • Although a very modern looking city, history and culture are still rife in Riyadh, with the Masmak Fort and the National Museum of Saudi Arabia both located here.

How the riyal adds up

The riyal has been the official currency of Saudi Arabia since the country was unified in 1932 and has existed as legal tender for years before this happened.

There are 100 halalas to every riyal. Some 1 riyal coins are marked as 100 halalas, but either style is accepted as legal tender. Most transactions are carried out in riyals, so it is far more convenient for both buyer and seller to round every amount to the nearest riyal instead of dealing in halalas.

Commonly used banknotes

The notes you will typically need in Saudi Arabia are for the value of 1 (light green), 5 (purple), 10 (brown), 50 (dark green), 100 (red) and 500 (blue) riyals. They each depict a historical king as well as a famous location or site within the country.
